Belarusian Democratic And Human Rights Activists Stage Minsk Protest; Lukashenka Arrests Another Leading Belarusian Democratic Opposition Leader

MINSK. May 10 (Interfax) - "Belarussian police have detained Belarussian United Civil Party leader Anatoly Lebedko in Minsk.

Lebedko told Interfax by phone that he had been detained on approach to October Square, where the opposition was holding an unsanctioned protest, saying he was being escorted to Minsk's Central district police department.

It was earlier reported that the Belarussian opposition organized a protest to mark the seventh anniversary of former Belarussian Interior Minister Yury Zakharenko's disappearance. About 40 people formed a chain on October Square, holding posters with pictures of Zakharenko and opposition leaders currently serving terms of administrative arrest for taking part in unsanctioned rallies." ...

May 10, 2006 Minsk Protest

Belarusian democratic and human rights activists "illegally" protesting the disappearances of several high-profile public figures, who disappeared in Belarus without a trace. Among those missing are Gen. Yuri Zakharenko, a former Interior Minister who disappeared in May 1999. The protesters accused President Alexander Lukashenka of involvement in the disappearances and demanded that currently held democratic opposition leaders and young prisoners of conscience be freed.
