San Francisco Opera Paces Metropolitan Opera; Composer Stewart Wallace To Work With Novelist-Librettist Amy Tan On World Premiere

"San Francisco Opera General Director David Gockley has confirmed plans for a big commission for the 2008-09 season.

He made the announcement last week at a reception given by Mayor Gavin Newsom to welcome Gockley to town.

In addition to the previously announced Philip Glass commission [with librettist Christoper Hampton for a Civil War opera entitled "Appomatix"], Gockley has tapped composer Stewart Wallace to work with Bay Area author Amy Tan on an operatic adaptation of her novel "The Bonesetter's Daughter."

Wallace and Gockley go way back. Their collaborations include the Houston Grand Opera-San Francisco Opera co-production of "Harvey Milk."" ...
