Faces of the Fallen

Yesterday, N. and I took advantage of the slight break in summer heat and humidity to visit Arlington National Cemetery. Our destinations were the John F. Kennedy and the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis gravesites and the Tomb of the Unknowns (one from the Second World War, one from the Korean War, and one from the Vietnam War). However, the highlight of our visit turned out to be the Faces of the Fallen exhibition of about 1,500 small (about 12 by 20 centimeters), largely representational, memorial paintings to the U.S. service personnel killed, since 9/11, in Afganistan and Iraq. This powerful exhibition is on view until December 31, 2005 (confirm first) at the new Women in Military Service For America Memorial and Museum which was beautifully carved out of the old Beaux Arts Memorial Structure on the opposite end of Memorial Bridge from Washington's Lincoln Memorial. http://www.facesofthefallen.org/main/
